Today we looked at how DVD’s have a certain region code on them and the reasons why this. I have found out that the reason they put these codes on the DVD’s is because of copyright purposes and therefore DVD’s which are brought in United States for example will not play on our DVD players in the United Kingdom as the region code is 1 for the United States. The region code on DVD’s in the United Kingdom is 2 and therefore the DVD players in the United Kingdom usually only support region 2 DVD’s.
So therefore I have found out that not all DVD’s can play anywhere in the world as they have different regions within the DVD. Also, as DVD’s come out at different times in different countries this helps prevent the movies being released early on DVD as they have the region coding within them.
I also researched into the different sound formats within DVD’s and how blank DVD’s have different formats, with some being able to re-record over programmes and some blank DVD’s which do not allow this, which was very interesting, as from my information I have gathered it presents all the features and formats in which the different DVD’s have.
This has helped me in understanding why region coding is in place, the different formats on DVD’s and the sound formats within DVD’s.
