Editing Skills Profile
This Editing Skills Profile is highlighting the skills which I have gained throughout the past assignments and the skills and knowledge I would like to gain through this assignment. This assignment is creating a social action programme and a factual programme.
In Terms of Editing:
Technology: Programmes, Premiere Pro, Camera Use
Editing Programmes: Premiere Pro CS3:
Existing Knowledge and Skills: I have used Premiere Pro CS3 for one assignment to date; this was for my Television Advert project. Through this project I was introduced to Premiere Pro, I had not used the programme before to edit footage. Therefore I gained a lot of new skills within this project; all the skills which I learnt showed within the outcome of the 30 second Television Advert. Some of the skills which I gained from this project include:
· How to correctly use the timelines within Premiere Pro to put the rushes together to create a piece of video.
· How to use the different, basic tools correctly to create a professional looking piece of video.
· How to add audio to the rushes, by using the timelines within Premiere Pro.
Target: I would like to continue to develop my skills further within Premiere Pro, which includes developing skills and gaining new skills. The programmes which I am creating within this assignment are longer than the television advert. Therefore, I would like to gain new skills within the continuity of a programme. By researching into continuity within films I can understand the way in which the programmes ‘flow’, I would therefore like to learn which tools to use to help with the continuity. I would also like to develop new skills and the use of new tools within Premiere Pro to create a professional standard programme.
Use of Camera
Existing Knowledge and Skills: From the previous television advert assignment I took part in a camera workshop, where I gained skills and knowledge in using the College Camera. I therefore have knowledge within how the camera works and how to use the camera correctly. This included: how to attach the battery to the camera, how to change modes (from filming to still photos) and how to attach the camera to the tripod. Through this workshop I learnt the basics about how to use the camera and this is the knowledge which I will use when filming our programmes for this assignment.
Target
Throughout this project I would like to develop my camera skills, the way in which I believe I can develop them is by interpreting my knowledge of camera shots and angles. For example, within a shot in the programme I would show my knowledge of the shot, with the reason and effect of this type of shot within the programme. This will show my knowledge from my research throughout the pre-production stage. Another effect which I could interpret is the Point of View Shot, I would like to use my camera skills to successfully show this shot. As I believe this shot is powerful and clearly shows the point of view of the programme itself.
Preparation Techniques: Pre-production: Research and Planning Documents
Existing Knowledge and Skills: Pre-production techniques for the production of a factual programme & social action and community programme include: Research and Planning Documents. Planning documents, these documents are important before editing begins. These type of planning documents are shooting schedule, contingency plan and shot log. These documents are needed because they help with the production stage of both filming and editing. These documents help with the filming as the Shooting Schedule visually shows the programme shot by shot, so this helps with the filming, as it shows what is the best order to shoot the scenes in. By having the shooting schedule this will help when editing the programmes together, as this shows the chronological order of the programme, to help when editing the rushes together. A shot log is also important when filming and editing, as this shows who has filmed the different shots.
Within Pre-Production, research is also important to the filming, this is because you need to research into the locations you want to use to gain permission (this could be surrounding opening times). Other research includes research into the subject itself within the programmes, for example, within our factual programme we would need to research into the subject of gadgets. This could include facts and figures about gadgets, this will give me a clearer understanding of the subject.
Target
Through filming and editing the Factual Programme and Social Action Programme, I hope to gain more knowledge with how documents such as Shot Logs and Production Schedules work. For example, for the Production Schedule, I would need to follow the order of the shots to create the exact programme on the shooting schedule. This will help me in understanding exactly how a production schedule works and how it can help when editing a programme together. For the research for the programmes I would like to carry out secondary research into the subject to have a clearer understanding of the subject, to be able to film and edit the programmes.
Process Tools: Uploading rushes, Converting Footage, Importing into Premiere Pro and Editing in Premiere Pro
Existing Knowledge and Skills: Within the process of editing there are many different aspects, these include: Uploading the Rushes to the Computer, Converting the Rushes, Importing them into Premiere Pro and actual editing within Premiere Pro. My existing skills and knowledge from this area within editing is that from my TV Advert Project I had to go through this process for the editing to begin. I learnt how to upload the rushes directly from the camera to the computer, the rushes from the camera then needed to be converted to AVI format on a programme called AVS Video Converter 6 for the footage to be imported into Premiere Pro. Once the rushes were converted I then imported them into Premiere Pro as the new file type was compatible with Premiere Pro. Once the footage was imported I could then start editing the footage and create the TV Advert. This is when the skills were applied and I was able to create the TV Advert with the new skills I learnt throughout the project.
Target: I would like to continue to learn new skills and knowledge within the way in which the process of editing happens. For example I would like to learn the best way to be able to edit footage, with the process essentials (listed above in Existing Knowledge and Skills). I would like to clearly apply my skills and knowledge to the new process of creating the programmes in terms of editing. The way in which I would achieve this target is by repeating the process I initially created within the TV Advert Project for editing. This will show my skills in the editing process for creating a film.
Post-Production Tools: Reviewing Work, Sample Viewing of Editing Techniques in Programme
Existing Knowledge and Skills: In terms of editing Post-Production Tools I have knowledge within how editing techniques are reviewed within the final product. The way in which I have been given feedback in the past on my editing techniques is by the method of sample viewing and reviewing my own work. From the sample viewing on my TV advert I gained feedback from the target audience of the advert and they commented on the way in which I edited the advert together. The types of techniques I included were transitions: cuts and slogans created in Photoshop. These were some of the techniques and the target audience believed I edited the advert well, as it was simple but effective use of premiere pro techniques. From this feedback in Post-Production I could review my work myself and see the opinions which the target audience had and also see how I could improve my advert.
Target: In terms of Post-Production editing, I would like to gain more critical feedback on my programmes. The reason for this is for me to be able to clearly improve my programmes with the critical improvement steps. This could include feedback from my target audience, but also from the client, as this is the person who I am creating the product (s) for; therefore I need to create a product to their standard. The way in which I would respond to the feedback is by improving the programme (s) before deadline or explaining in my Evaluation how I would change and improve the programmes.
Review of Editing Skills Profile
Technology
Premiere Pro Skills Developed
The target which I wanted to achieve within the aspect of Premiere Pro CS3 was to develop my skills further. This included creating a factual and social action programme with continuity, as these programmes are 1 ½ minutes long and 30 seconds long. This makes the factual programme 3 times longer than the advert I created in Premiere Pro, which is the project I wanted to develop my skills from in Premiere Pro. I wanted to create continuity within both these programmes, as they are a completely different concept to the projects I have edited in Premiere Pro previously. I believe I have achieved this target of using the skills I had gained in the TV Advert Project and applied them within creating these two programmes. The way in which I have done this is by using the skills I previously had within Premiere Pro, I have hopefully used these different skills to create the programmes in Premiere Pro and that it shows they have developed from my TV Advert Project. In terms of the Continuity of the programmes I believe I have created do present Continuity in the way the programme is filmed and has been edited. This is an important aspect within a programme; this makes the narrative clear to the audience and helps the programme ‘flow’. Overall, I believe I have reached this target of developing and applying my skills within Premiere Pro and creating programmes with clear continuity.
Use of Camera
In terms of the Use of the Camera to film the footage I believe I have achieved this target. This target was to develop my camera skills; this included developing different camera shots. Although, within the filming of the programmes I did not use as many different camera shots as I could have to show my knowledge of camera skills. For example, I could have used the camera Point of View Camera Shot. Although we did not use this within the programme, as it is more of a ‘scripted’ piece of work, which shows exactly what is happening or what wants to happen. But within filming the programmes I have used different camera shots. As within a 1 ½ minute programme different camera shots need to be used, therefore the parts which I filmed did show my skills in using different camera shots. Also within the assignment we worked in groups to film both programmes and we had to film at least 30 seconds each within the programmes. Therefore I have developed my skills within using the camera, as I have filmed a lot more individually then previously in the TV Advert Assignment.
Preparation Techniques: Pre-production, Research and Planning Documents
In terms of preparation techniques with planning documents, I believe I have achieved this target. This is because I have completed the different planning documents for the programmes. For example I have completed a shot log for the group, which shows who filmed the different shots within the programmes. I have also completed a shooting schedule for the social action programme; therefore I have gained new skills in working with this schedule to both film and edit the programme. By completing and working with different production documents such as the shot log and shooting schedule I have been able to gain new skills in learning how these documents work. I now understand the shooting schedule very clearly, as I have written the schedule and worked from this to help film and edit the programme. In terms of the shot log, this has really helped in working out who will film what scenes and who has actually filmed them. This is the first time I have used a shot log and as a group it has evenly spread out the filming of the programmes. In terms of my research target I believe I have achieved the target of researching into the subjects which we are covering within the programmes. I individually carried out some secondary research into the subject of gadgets and the affect they have on students. I have also carried out other research for my own individual initial ideas for the programme; therefore I have a clearer understanding of the subjects to make a programme.
Process Tools: Uploading rushes, Converting Footage, Importing into Premiere Pro and Editing in Premiere Pro
In terms of the process tools in this editing aspect of the assignment I believe I have achieved this target. This is because believe I have applied my previous skills within the process of uploading the rushes to importing them into Premiere Pro. Within this project I have had more input within the process of uploading the rushes and converting the footage using the AVS Conversion Software. As a group we uploaded the rushes and converted them to AVI format. We came across one problem within this process, but we resolved this as a group, by clearly reading the setting instructions. By working in a group of 3 we have shared the work of the process of uploading the rushes and I now clearly understand how the conversion software works. I have also applied my existing knowledge of importing the rushes into AVI in separate folders, which makes it clearer for the programme to be edited together. I have applied my existing knowledge clearly by starting to edit the programme in Premiere Pro. I did complete the editing within Premiere Pro with my skills and knowledge from the TV Advert project.
Post-Production Tools: Reviewing Work, Sample Viewing of Editing Techniques in Programme
In terms of post production I have gained feedback from the target audience of the programmes in the form of sample viewing. By carrying out a sample viewing on both programmes I am able to see the aspects which I could change if I were to repeat this assignment. I will state this feedback in my evaluation and explain how I would change and improve the programmes to show the client how I would respond to feedback in order to improve the programmes.
I have gained feedback from the sample viewing questionnaires from the target audience; this allowed me to see some improvements I could make within my programmes.
Overall, through this Editing Skills Profile I have shown my initial skills in terms of editing and I have stated whether I have achieved my initial targetsreview of my skills learnt.
