Week 4: Photoshop Progress For My Movie Poster and Mood Board Completed

Photoshop Progress for my Movie Poster
Our final movie poster is to be handed in on Friday and as we are using Photoshop for our movie poster I have learnt many new skills in which will help me in producing the movie poster.
Today I have learnt about tools which help in making the subject of the image stand out from the rest of the image, which has a detailed background. The Magnetic Lasso tool is used for this and you simply move the tool around the image you wish to cut out. This cuts around the image you are taking out from the main image and gives the image a finishing touch, with smooth edges and the image has been taken out from the main image very carefully, and this tool is simple and easy to use.
I have also found out about the different font websites which I am able to use to create my ‘unique’ title font for my movie poster. These include websites such as Da Font, Cool Text and 1001 Fonts, all these websites create fonts with different effects, they are easy to use and create your font with the word you wish to use in a matter of seconds. My favourite font website is Da Font and I have created my Film Poster title on this website.
The other techniques which can bring focus to the main image are tools such as Hue and Saturation; these can change the image in colour and give the image an impact for it to stand out from the main image. Blur can also be used to help the focus be on one certain part of the main image and within Photoshop you are able to change the levels of the Hue and Saturation and the levels of Blur. This is good and effective as you are able to change the image to exactly how you expect it to be.
I have also learnt how to create Masking Text, which is where you are able to use the Horizontal Mask Tool to create a word or phrase out of an image, in class an example was shown of this and a word was created out of a Union Jack Image. The word is simply taken from the image and you can place this word anywhere within a document on Photoshop, I believe this is effective as if you had a very strong theme of some sort and you wanted to show this through every aspect on the movie poster, having a title with this effect will add and give the poster the impact of the theme.
Overall, through the process of creating my movie poster, I have learnt a lot of new skills and learnt short cuts on certain tools which makes Photoshop easier to use when you can press buttons for the tools. So therefore I have learnt how to set up a canvas and learnt a lot about how Photoshop works and the many different editing tools you can use within Photoshop.

Mood Board:

I have now completed my mood board with annotation for my creation of my movie poster and therefore this moodboard represents how I have created my Movie Poster including the colour scheme used and the theme is represented through the Mood Board.
Below is my finished Mood Board which is annotated and clearly shows the colour scheme of blue and green and represents the theme in of which my movie poster also represents.

Week 4: Progress

Progress

Through this blog the main points which I will be covering are:
  • Report on any new skills which I have learnt after every lesson, including new techniques learnt in Photoshop and any research which I have gained which will help me with my project.
  • Progress of the project, such as the Film Poster Project, by updating on this blog I can review how my progress on the poster is coming along and then I am able to see what I need to do next on the poster. Including my research into film posters, the development of my ideas for my film poster, sketches of my film poster with colour and finally producing the film poster itself.
  • Targets: Which is what I would like to learn and develop my new skills further within programmes such as Photoshop and what I would like to learn more about.
Through the Photoshop Tutorial, I have learnt alot about the within Photoshop and some of these include:
  • How an image can be transformed instantly by choosing one effect, such as a paint effect, and within the effect you are able to adjust certain features within the effect, for the image to be exactly how you intend it to be.
  • Which file formats are used within Photoshop and the main file format used in Photoshop is PSD, as this saves the file with the layers and does not change the image. Also, the colour output which is used for printing an image, as the image colour needs to be in CMYK format, as this is the format which the printer prints in.
  • I have also learnt how to put the layers into folders, therefore you can easily see which layers are where within the file and these layers will remain in the folder which they are placed, this helps in managing the layers within a file.
The features which I need to consider for my own film poster are:
  • Iconography: This is icons or symbols used within the poster to suggest and relate to the films genre. For my film poster my theme is fashion and therefore the item and symbol which suggests this through my poster is that the main image is a shoe, which shows and relates directly to fashion, as this is a fashion item. Through using this shoe as a symbol, it also suggests the target audience of the film and that my film target audience is girls, as the film's theme is Fashion.
  • The Composition of the film poster is the way in which the poster is presented and the layout of the poster. With using Rule of Thirds, this helps in showing where the main subject (image) should be placed on the poster, and how this will have an effect on the poster. On my film poster I am planning to place the main image to the right of the film poster, as the image is a high heel this image fits into the layout of the film poster as the heel is tall and reaches nearly to the top of the Film Poster.
  • Colours: The colours within a film poster suggest the genre of the film, and for my film poster my colour scheme is Blue's and Green's, these are colours which work well together and blend well, therefore this represents what fashion is about, which is standing out. So these colours represent this aspect within fashion and can show an extra element about the film and the reasons behind the colours. This colour scheme also suggests that my target audience is girls, as these are colours which may appeal to girls, these colours are not the obvious colours which would appeal to the target audience of girls, as the colours associated with girls would probably be pinks and purples.
  • Canvas Set Up: The canvas set up in Photoshop helps present the image you are creating, and the basic Canvas Setup is International Paper A4, Resolution of 100, this is a basic canvas setup and the best set up for what I am using the canvas for. The layout for my Film Poster is portrait, so therefore the canvas needs to be in portrait mode. The colour format which also needs to be included in the set up is that it needs to be in CMYK format, this allows the image to be printed, as when documents are printed, the printer uses 4 colours in the format of CMYK.

Week 3: Using Photoshop For My Mood Board

Photoshop Development

Today we learnt how to use Photoshop to add text to our mood boards which we scanned in. We were shown how to add the text to the mood board and shown how to add effects to these texts, such as shadow effects for the text, and you are able to adjust elements within the effects so that the title is exactly what you want it to look like. You are able to change the size of the text, the size of the shadow effect on the writing and colour of the text. We were adding text to our mood boards to annotate the images which we included and how they related to our film, as my theme is fashion I made a mood board with clothes and accessories on and with the colour scheme of blue's and green's and I then had to annotate around the images and explain why I chose these images for my mood  board.

I believe that text has a massive impact within DVD Menus, as the main title of the film on the main menu may become the 'signature' title for the film and this may be how the film is remembered by people. So therefore font has a high impact and brings the DVD menu together.

I believe that I now have a higher knowledge of photoshop and know the main elements which I will need in Photoshop to help me create my own DVD Menu. In now knowing these features and tools in Photoshop I feel more confident in using Photoshop as I now know how to edit images and add texts to images in Photoshop.

Overall, I am happy with the progress I have made in Photoshop, as I have used it in the past for other projects. I am also more confident in developing skills I have gained from other projects and with my new skills in Photoshop I am more confident in bringing my previous skills from Photoshop and my new skills together to make my DVD Menu.

Week 3: Film Poster Analysis' Typed Up

 Film Poster Analysis
These are the film poster analysis' which have helped me in finding out what features there are within a film poster. This has helped me as I now know that film posters mainly include, a main image, film company logo, title of film and the release date of the film. Other film posters include the actors and actresses names and credit information. Another feature which is important is the colour scheme of the film poster, as this is an element which will appeal to the target audience of the film.

Week 3: Skills Profile

To produce my movie poster, we are using Photoshop, I have used Photoshop in the past on previous projects and I have enjoyed using a different programme to create many different effects, I have used Photoshop before for editing photos, creating a new magazine, creating a new edition of an existing magazine, using my own story lines and my own picture. I am looking forward to using Photoshop again for a different style of work and to be able to explore Photoshop by using different tools and effects for a different type of project.

What I have learnt from using Photoshop today:
I have learnt how to use short cuts correctly within Photoshop to edit pictures. I have learnt how to use the magic eraser tool correctly and how this tools helps in creating images, I have also leanrt how to use the 'move' tool to move a picture from a separate part of Photoshop into the canvas. I have learnt about the different effects which can be created on different images instantly and how this you can change the effect to what you exactly want your image to look like. Overall from today I have learnt how to use Photoshop tools which will help me in making my movie poster.

For my targets, I would like to develop my knowledge in using Photoshop and learn the ways in which film posters are brought together to make a final product to appeal to a certain target audience. I would like to learn about the ways in which you can create a well brought together movie poster to reflect the genre of the film, as I believe a film poster is the first product which will catch people's attention and draw people into the movie.

Week 3: Research Into DVD Formats and Region Codes

Today we looked at how DVD’s have a certain region code on them and the reasons why this. I have found out that the reason they put these codes on the DVD’s is because of copyright purposes and therefore DVD’s which are brought in United States for example will not play on our DVD players in the United Kingdom as the region code is 1 for the United States. The region code on DVD’s in the United Kingdom is 2 and therefore the DVD players in the United Kingdom usually only support region 2 DVD’s.
So therefore I have found out that not all DVD’s can play anywhere in the world as they have different regions within the DVD.  Also, as DVD’s come out at different times in different countries this helps prevent the movies being released early on DVD as they have the region coding within them.
I also researched into the different sound formats within DVD’s and how blank DVD’s have different formats, with some being able to re-record over programmes and some blank DVD’s  which do not allow this, which was very interesting, as from my information I have gathered it presents all the features and formats in which the different DVD’s have.
This has helped me in understanding why region coding is in place, the different formats on DVD’s and the sound formats within DVD’s.

Week 2: Mood Board Progress

In this lesson I have found images which capture the genre of my film and the colour scheme which is the same as the colour scheme on my movie poster. All of the images and the colour scheme will come together in a mood board to symbolise and show what my movie is about so that when you see my mood board you will be able to tell the genre and theme of my film.

The main theme of my film is Fashion, as my film is about a fashion designer, therefore I have searched and found images within magazines which are related to fashion. My pictures include my colour scheme of green's and blue's with pictures of people wearing fashion items such as handbags, dresses and different clothes, all in the same colour scheme as my movie poster.

I have also found words in different style which relate to fashion, words such as 'Style' as I believe these words will give the effect towards the moodboard that my mood board is suggesting 'Fashion' by the pictures and the words. When all these pictures are brought together you hopefully will see the mood of my film genre and theme and see that this is fashion in this certain colour scheme.

Overall, I am going to continue my research into finding more images for my mood board and I am then going to bring all the images together to make my mood board.

Below is a sample of pictures from my Mood Board.

Week 2: Update of My Ideas For My Movie Poster

I have continued my planning on my new movie poster, and I have now come up with some different ideas for the poster. I have changed the layout of the poster, with the layout being portrait now, I have found a picture of a very high stiletto heel, and this reaches across the width of the page and nearly covers the height of the page.

I believed this would look good as it would look very sleek and finished as a final product, and will go in with the theme of 'Fashion' as the shoe is the main feature of the poster. I have also changed the colour scheme, as I preferred the colour scheme of Blue's and Turquoise's, as to me this suggests more 'serious' fashion and will give the poster the finishing touch with this colour scheme. Another adjustment I have made to my poster is that my main character will now being sitting on the tip of the shoe and looking directly towards the person looking at the poster.

Overall, I am happy with how my designs are developing and I am happy with the design I have created at the moment.

Week 2: Initial Ideas For My Movie Poster

Today we learnt more in detail about movie posters and started developing our own Movie Poster ideas. My idea for my movie poster is that my film is about a fashion designer, and is aimed at girls, and from the film poster you will be able to see this, and who the target audience is.
I have made some sketches of what I would like my movie poster to look like and thought about how the genre of the film will come across to the target audience. Within my film poster the main focus will be a Stiletto Heel, as this suggests the fashion element to my film, I will then incorporate my main character into the shape of the Stiletto Heel at the side of the heel.  The colour scheme within my poster is purple’s and pinks, which again suggests this film is aimed at girls as the target audience. Also on my poster is the title, which will be in bold purple writing to stand out on the poster and catch people’s attention. The background of my movie poster is images of fashion related items, such as clothes, handbags and jewellery, this will be in the style of a scrapbook/mood board effect, to add to the idea that this film is about fashion.

An existing movie poster which helped me in developing this idea was The Devil Wears Prada, as this helped me in knowing where to place the heel and how much of the poster the heel should cover.
Overall, I am looking forward to developing these ideas further and being able to use my own images to create a brand new movie poster, and I am looking forward to using  Photoshop for a different project and how Photoshop can help me in bringing my whole Movie Poster together.

Week 2: Deconstruction of DVD Menus

Today we looked at how DVD menus are brought together to make a final product. I have learnt that there is a lot more to how the menus are brought together, as there are various links to different features within the menu. Therefore you have got other menus coming off a main menu, in a normal DVD menu nowadays there is usually 4 options for you to click on within the main menu and these options will take you to other parts of the menu. These 4 options include: Play Movie, Scene Selection, Extra Features and Audio Setup, although, not every DVD menu has these options, as a Documentary DVD which I deconstructed only had two links, being, Play Film and Scene Selection.
The elements within the menus, some of these include: Animation, Still Images, and Clips from the Film, Font, Background, Rollovers (to select an option button) and Music.
Researching and deconstructing the DVD menus has really helped me in knowing what elements I will have to include in my own DVD menu and take into consideration elements such as, images, movie clips, music and animation.

Week 1: Deconstruction of the Movie Poster, 'Grown Ups'

      (Grown Ups Movie Poster)

 Grown Ups Movie Poster Deconstruction

I have learnt how to deconstruct movie posters and learnt what features are on the poster and how all the features on the poster come together to show what the movie is like. This movie features 5 men who have known each other since they were younger and are reunited all together and go on holiday with each other and with their families. They show how they have not actually grown up through the years and they are still kids at heart. The poster captures how they all were when they were kids, but it contrasts with the title of Grown Ups and suggests that they actually have not grown up even though they are now ‘Grown Ups’.

1) The title featured on Movie poster is very bold and to me, is the first feature I notice. This title is in 3D and blue bold writing, this stands out and therefore you will be able to remember the name of the movie even if you do not remember the whole poster. The title is placed underneath the main image in the centre and catches your attention as the first place you might look is the centre to see the title and then look up to the main image.

2) The main image on the poster: This image is introducing the 5 main characters within the film, the 5 men when they were younger and at school. From these pictures you can see what their characters will be like within the film, and as I have seen the film the pictures on the poster do definitely reflect their characters in the film. The style of pictures are as though you would see them in a year book, they are very much like school photos, which shows that they are still quite young and in school.

3) Tagline: The poster features a tagline which links in with the movie, the tagline on this poster says ‘Back then they were too young to know better’, this is shown at the start of the 5 pictures and then towards the end of the pictures along the page it continues the tagline ‘Now they have no excuse’. This tagline has a great effect as it is almost suggesting that they have grown up through time and become adults.

4) The colour Scheme is very neutral as the writing is in black and the title then stands out in blue, with the white background, this has a great effect as from the poster you are able to tell what kind of movie this will be, to me this poster does suggest comedy as the pictures show everyone smiling, which shows how the characters come across.

5) Also featured on the poster: The names of the actors are featured above their picture, which again shows how the pictures are like school photos. The release date is shown at the bottom of the title, to let everyone know when they can see this movie and then there is also a website for people to go onto to find out more information about the film and the characters.

Week 1: My Progress and Learning About Film Posters

Over the past three days I have learnt a lot about how just from a film poster you can tell who the audience for that film can be, and what features are included within a film poster. This has helped me in developing my ideas for a new film and for this film I have to create a film poster to appeal to a certain target audience. My ideas for this poster were that I definitely want the poster to stand out and to catch people’s attention if they walk past it. The way I believe a film poster to be eye catching is firstly the title; to me if the title of the film stands out from the rest of the poster, with bold colourings, then I would remember the film title and also the poster. The main image on the poster always catches my attention and from the image on the poster you can tell a lot about what the film is about and the audience it may appeal to. As with a powerful image it is able to tell a lot about the movie and most probably features the main actors and actresses in the film.

From this research I am now planning my own movie poster for a new film, and this research which I have collected will help me as I now know what needs to be included on a movie poster, including the colour scheme, credits, title, release date, actresses and actors names and the main image. These are all essential features for a film poster to appeal to the target audience.

Week 1: Review of 'Grown Ups'

Today we went to the cinema to see Grown Ups, we were asked to watch the film and think about who the target audience for this film would be. I believe the target audience for this film is both male and female, as this film genre was a comedy, I believe that both male and female would enjoy this movie as comedy appeals to everyone, and I guarantee that you with find one moment in the movie in which you would hysterically laugh. The movie showed how even though the five main characters were all grown up with children, they still act like children in many different ways, so therefore the target audience age range would be I believe from 14 years plus, as every age range will have a great laugh at this film.

This film may appeal more to men as you automatically presume that if the film is a comedy and about five men then this film is for men, although I do not believe this is the case as I thoroughly enjoyed this film and believed it was very funny and written very well, as it had a serious meaning to the film, about men having to grow up, although deep down it shows how they have not really grown up by showing that they still act the same way as they did when they were younger. Overall, I believe this film will appeal to both male and female as to me everyone enjoys a good comedy.
